Brown Bros Roofing was founded in 1932 as a roofing company. We have expanded our services over the years, but we are still true to our roots as roofers. This month we would like to change it up a little bit and talk about case studies. What is a case study? A case study for us is understanding the problems a home may have and working out a solution. Example would be: a non-venting roof to a venting roof.
Consultation:
The homeowner called us for a free roof gutter inspection on their home. It was determined that the roof and gutters needed to get replaced.
What we found:
The roof had moss growing on it and an inspection of the attic confirmed that the bathroom exhaust was venting into the attic and caused the roof boards to become moldy.
The roof shingles granules were filling up the gutters along with leaves. During the rain storms, the water backed under the roof shingles causing the roof to leak. The gutters were old and thin and the downspouts had splits on them, and water would spill out of them and on occasion, during heavy rain the water would enter the cellar.
Decisions:
The homeowner decided on a Owens Corning “Duration” roof shingle, the color Charcoal Black. The reason for choosing Owen Corning “Duration” was simple, it came with a algae resistance warranty which was important to him. The gutters were replaced with 5” black seamless gutters and black downspouts, including downspout extensions which prevents entering the basement. The roof boards were replaced with 3/4” Plywood. The bathroom exhaust vent was connected and vented out the roof as it should.
Overhang:
The homeowner chose to take advantage of us replacing the Ply-wood on the roof and asked if we could extend the overhang on the front and rear of the house. Some great reasons for extending the overhang are simple, it protects the exterior doors, windows and siding from the rain. Rain water can leak down the windows and the door trim over time can cause moisture problems to the interior of the home. An overhang also assists with keeping water out of the basement.
Siding:
The homeowner chose to also replace siding and chose Everlast Siding for their home for a few reasons. Everlast is a composite siding and is resistant to fading or discoloration and is impervious to water. It never needs painting and looks like wood. The most important reason for choosing this siding is it repels water. “We have had water issues for years and I believe this siding is the answer for us. I also love the sharpness of the white color. It looks like painted clap board but, without the maintenance”.
Pella Imprevia Windows:
The homeowner also wanted to replace his old draft windows. He chose Pella Imprevia Windows. These windows are strong and made out of fiberglass. Water will not delaminate, dry or rot the exterior. It will also keep water out of the interior. These windows are far superior to Vinyl windows. Again, no water will enter his home, fade or rot. These windows are 5 star rated and energy efficient and the homeowner is looking forward to lower energy costs.

In summary:
Homeowner chose one company to do all the exterior work to his home. Any problems that may occur over time, the homeowner only has to make one phone call.
