Spring Outdoor Home Maintenance Checklist
Spring is less than a few weeks away. At Brown Bros Roofing, we’ve gone ahead and made a “Outdoor Home Maintenance” checklist to get your home ready for warmer days.
Wash Windows
After the winter, your windows need some TLC. Get them looking shiny again by giving them a good, deep cleaning. For best results, use a hose and cleaning solution to rinse off any dirt on your windows, then scrub with a brush, followed by a squeegee. No squeegee? No problem. You can use a rag to dry and remove any excess water.
Sweep Off Cobwebs
It’s not Halloween anymore; you don’t need them. By getting rid of your home’s cobwebs, not only will your curb appeal drastically improve but your home will also be safer, too. Cobwebs can trap ice and water, which can potentially cause —you guessed it—roof damage. But by cleaning your cobwebs regularly, this can deter spiders from building cobwebs on your home, eventually leaving you web-free. (We recommend using a long brush or pole along with a cobweb cleaning spray to get rid of them.)
Clean Gutters
We get it—it’s not fun. But by cleaning your home’s gutters, one can reduce the risk of water and roof damage to their property. When gutters are clogged, water can overflow into your home’s foundation, leading to cracks, and siding, leading to decay. (Your home’s paint will also peel.) Once there’s nowhere for the water to go, it’ll go to your roof, causing water leaks. Depending on the material of your roof, the water can cause wood rot or mold growth and structural damage. Do yourself a favor & clean those gutters before things get worse.
Clean Chimney
Know the facts: if you don’t clean your chimney often, this could cause a fire. When you use your fireplace, creosote, which is caused by wood combustion, accumulates in your chimney. With each fire, the wood-burning gradually causes damage to your chimney’s lining. Combine the two—creosote accumulation and weak chimney lining—- and you just might start a fire. Another reason it’s important to keep your chimney clean is because of carbon monoxide poisoning. If your chimney is blocked by dirt and debris, dangerous gasses, like carbon monoxide, are not able to properly flow out of your chimney. Instead, they’re sent back into your living room, contaminating the clean air.
Inspect roof, siding, windows and decking
After a harsh Massachusetts winter, inspecting your home’s siding, roof, and deck in the spring is crucial for preventing costly damage. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can weaken these exterior structures, leading to issues like cracks, leaks, and rot. Your roof may have missing or damaged shingles from heavy snow and wind, while siding can suffer from warping or moisture penetration. Decks, especially wooden ones, are susceptible to water damage, loose boards, or mold growth due to winter moisture. A thorough spring inspection allows you to catch problems early, ensuring your home remains safe, durable, and well-maintained throughout the year.
