The siding on your home is one of the most important aspects of a home. If you want to make a good first impression or just boost your curb appeal, installing vinyl siding can transform the look of your home. Vinyl siding is one of the most popular choices among today’s homeowners due to its durability, color, style options, and low maintenance qualities. Although it does require minimal maintenance, it does become dirty and stained over time.
Here are factors that contribute to this:
- Outdoor exposure: Wind blowing dirt and debris against your home, leaves falling, rain, bird and insect droppings, and spider webs.
- Stains: While vinyl is designed to resist stains, algae buildup can still occur.
- Mildew: You may notice mildew on shaded or damp parts of your home that don’t see much sunlight.
How to Clean
The tools you will need to do for this job are a soft bristle brush with a long handle, a garden hose, cleaning solutions, and a ladder.
For general dirtiness, all you will need is a bucket of soapy water, dish soap or laundry detergent, a soft bristle brush, and a garden hose. Thoroughly clean the siding with the soapy water and rinse with the hose. Avoid prolonged or high-pressure rinsing. We do not recommend pressure washing your vinyl siding, this can cause moisture damage and discoloration. Using the garden hose is the best way to clean your siding. If this is your first time cleaning your siding, test a small amount of the solution on the siding and wait a couple of days to see if there are any effects. Continue this cleaning process when you see there was no damage done.
Stains:
Occasionally stains can be stubborn, like algae build-up that does not come off with the soapy water. In these cases, it will be best to contact a siding contractor. They will be able to provide you with guidance on the next steps because they have expert experience plus the cleaning products you need readily available. When you get this product it is best to test a small position before using it on all your siding.
Mildew:
Vinyl siding is mildew resistant, however, if the siding is dirty mildew can grow on the dirt, especially in warmer climates with high humidity. To remove mildew the mixture is a bit different. Instead, mix ⅓ cup of Tide detergent, ⅔ cup of Trisodium, one quart of 5% Sodium Hypochlorite (Clorox bleach), and three quarts of water. If this solution does not remove your mildew, you can contact a siding contractor for other ideas and solutions.
