Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

The falling leaves and sunny days are peaceful, but they’re also a sign that colder, stormy weather is on the way. Now is the perfect time to start taking care of your home to prepare it for winter. Let’s go through a maintenance checklist for the fall.

Keep Gutters Clear & Clean

Sticks, leaves, and other debris from trees can clog up gutters in the fall season. When gutters get clogged, it can lead to water running down your siding and possible flooding. Clean out your gutters if you’re able, or call a contractor to do the job. If your gutters didn’t perform well with light summer rain and are old, you should have a new gutter system installed by a professional. That will keep water safely away from your foundation.

Check For Cracks in Stairs & Walkways

Once winter comes, the cold and salt in ice melt can quickly lead to cracks in your stairs, drive, and walkway; so you want to prepare it for the winter weather. It’s important to head into the colder season with a safe path to and from your home. Make sure that you don’t have any dangerous cracks in asphalt, stone, or concrete that could lead to a slip and fall.

Get a Good Look at the Roof

It’s not often that you take a good hard look at your roof or have it inspected. But now is the perfect time of the year to do so. You still have time to make a repair or have a new roof installed before inclement weather strikes. If you feel comfortable on a ladder and know what to look for, you can take a look at your roof yourself. But more than likely, in Massachusetts, you’ll want to leave this job to a pro roofer. Signs like dark spots, moss gross, and more mean that your roof is due for a replacement.

Clean the Chimney

If you’ve got a fireplace, it’s surely something you want to take advantage of when the weather cools off. It’s imperative to make sure that it’s safe to light a fire, though, and that starts with making sure that it’s clean. Your safest bet is working with a chimney contractor who can safely do the job right.

Turn Off Hoses & Faucets

Outdoor faucets should be shut off before winter comes to help you avoid pipes freezing. Before shutting them off, you want to drain and hoses and pack them away in your shed for the season. Don’t forget to put your grill away as well!
